The former “Brown Room” of the home economics department, so-called for its window curtains, is the new lo cale where new Superintendent Howard Thompson will reign as of Monday morning. Big madcap sale is all set again That craziest of all bargain events—the mad fifth annual Hot Diggity Day, sponsored by the Chapel Hill Carrboro Merchants ‘Association — will be staged throughout the community this Friday. The mad-cap sales promotional event features in numerable buys that will never be equaled anywhere except in each succeeding Hot Diggity Day. Through tradition this has built up each year to become Chapel Hill - Carrboro’s outstanding shopper’s special. Last year, according |o .businessmen’s estimates, more than 15,000 persons jammed stores throughout the commun ity as merchants slashed prices on seasonal stocks and offered unusual bargains on special purchase items. » Many merchants found crowds waiting at their doors when they came to” open for business. Some hopeful customers spent the night on the sidewalk in order to be at the head of the shopping line. Trade Promotions Committee Chairman Carlton Byrd noted that free pizza and Pepsi Colas will be giv en out from 2 to 5 p. m. Friday at stands in front of Central Carolina Bank and Trust Co. at Columbia St. and Ledbetter-Pickard on E. Franklin St. In addition free ice cream will be given out to children throughout all shopping centers in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Through the courtesy of local banks a throng of fee-ribboned Hot Diggity Girls will give out free park ing meter nickels to drivers. • A number of stores will observe late closing hours Friday to accommodate expected crowds. And the offer ings of several firms include sale prices keyed to Fri day the 13th — 13 per cent discounts, 13-cent purchas es, and baker’s dozen buys.
